Travel - International
Air
International airports: Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) (website: www.portseattle.org/seatac) is 22km (14 miles) south of the city (travel time – 20 minutes). Shuttles and buses link the airport to points throughout the city, running continuously 24-hours; a door-to-door service is available from Shuttle Express, serving a variety of destinations, including Seattle and Tacoma. The Airport Express Gray Line departs twice an hour to downtown Seattle hotels. Metro Transit offers a public bus service to Seattle, while Sound Transit has regional services. Beginning September 24 2005, the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel will be closed for two years to build Link light rail between SeaTac and downtown Seattle. All buses currently operating in the tunnel will move to surface streets in downtown Seattle. Taxis are available. The airport Ground Transportation Information desk is located on the third floor of the parking garage.
Approximate flight times
From Seattle to London is nine hours five minutes, and to San Francisco is one hour 50 minutes.
Sea
Washington State Ferries (website: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries) link Seattle with the Olympic Peninsula, Bainbridge Island and other points in the region. The Victoria Clipper (website: www.victoriaclipper.com) links Victoria and Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada) to Seattle via high-speed catamarans.
Rail
Three Amtrak (tel: (800) 872 7245 (toll-free); website: www.amtrak.com) lines cross the State. The daily ‘Empire Builder’ from Chicago splits at Spokane, with onward services to Seattle and Portland (Oregon). There are four trains daily from Seattle to Portland; the ‘Coast Starlight’ continues on to Los Angeles, while the daily ‘Amtrak Cascades’ service comes from Eugene-Springfield (Oregon) and heads north to Vancouver, British Columbia via Tacoma (travel time – four hours); see the California and Illinois sections for other travel times. The Seattle station is located at 303 South Jackson Street; car hire is available (Budget, Hertz and National).
Road
Greyhound (tel: (800) 229 9424 (toll-free); website: www.greyhound.com) is the main carrier. Approximate driving times: From Seattle to Vancouver is three hours, to Portland is three hours, to Spokane is six hours, to Boise is 10 hours, to Calgary is 15 hours, to Los Angeles is 24 hours, to Chicago is 44 hours, to Dallas is 45 hours, to New York is 61 hours, and to Miami is 69 hours. All times are based on non-stop driving at or below the applicable speed limits.

From Seattle to Vancouver is four hours, to Portland is four hours and to Spokane is seven hours. Greyhound (tel: (800) 229 9424; website: www.greyhound.com) is the main carrier.
Urban
Seattle has an excellent bus system. An underground bus tunnel operates through central Seattle from the International District to the Convention Center, with stops at Pioneer Square, the financial district and the Westlake Center. A high-speed monorail links the city centre with the Seattle Center. Public transport is free in the centre of downtown. Taxis and car hire are also available.
