Travel - International
Air
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) (website: www.phl.org) is 13km (8 miles) southwest of the city (travel time – 25 minutes). The cheapest way to reach the city centre is the SEPTA Airport Express Train, running every 30 minutes to all three city centre stations, 0600-2400 daily. Taxis, car hire and limousine services are also available. Pittsburgh International Airport (website: www.pitairport.com) is 22.5km (14 miles) west of the city centre. Port Authority Transit public buses run approximately every 20 minutes daily 0500-2400 to Oakland via Robinson and downtown Pittsburgh. The Airlines Transportation shuttle runs every hour daily 0700-2200 to downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland. Limousine services, taxis and car hire are also available.

From London to Philadelphia is eight hours 20 minutes, and to Pittsburgh is eight hours 55 minutes.
Lake/River
Pennsylvania has three of the country’s busiest ports within its borders. Philadelphia is the largest freshwater port in the world. Erie is one of the major Great Lakes ports and Pittsburgh is one of the nation’s largest inland ports, providing access to the extensive 1400km- (900 mile-) US inland waterway system.
Rail
Pennsylvania has dozens of passenger railroads (website: www.parailways.com) in addition to mainline Amtrak (tel: (800) 872 7245 (toll-free); website: www.amtrak.com) services. Philadelphia is home to one of Amtrak’s busiest stations, at 30th Street, which is served by the ‘Acela Express’ service linking Washington, DC (travel time – one hour 35 minutes) with New York City (travel time - one hour 10 minutes) and Boston (travel time – five hours). It also receives Amtrak trains from Chicago, Miami and New Orleans, and NJ Transit trains from Atlantic City. Free transfers to the urban transportation system, run by SEPTA, are available to Amtrak passengers (request upon ticket purchase). Pittsburgh has daily Amtrak services to Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Road
Bus: Greyhound (tel: (800) 229 9424 (toll-free); website: www.greyhound.com) is the main service provider.
Approximate driving times
From Philadelphia to Baltimore is two hours, to New York is two hours, to Washington, DC is three hours, to Pittsburgh is six hours, to Chicago is 14 hours, to Miami is 25 hours, to Dallas is 31 hours, to Los Angeles is 56 hours and to Seattle is 59 hours. From Pittsburgh to Niagara Falls is fpur hours, to Washington, DC is four hours, and to Chicago is eight hours. All times are based on non-stop driving at or below the applicable speed limits.

From Philadelphia to New York is two hours, to Washington, DC is three hours, to Pittsburgh is seven hours, to Chicago is 18 hours, to Miami is 30 hours, to Dallas is 37 hours, to Los Angeles is 65 hours, and to Seattle is 74 hours.
Urban
In Philadelphia, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) (tel: (215) 580 7800; website: www.septa.org) has interconnecting buses, trolleys (streetcars), subways and elevated railways. From May-November, the distinctive PHLASH buses connect most of the city’s major attractions. Exact change is required on all services. Pittsburgh has an efficient network of buses serving the various districts. The PAT subway service is rather modest but is free in downtown Pittsburgh.
