    Tate Modern

Description: Tate Modern, housed in the former Bankside Power Station on the south bank of the River Thames, is Britain’s new national museum of modern art, opened in 2000. It showcases international modern art from 1900 to the present day and, like its sister museum, Tate Britain, it presents visitors with a themed, rather than a chronological, tour of art. Each theme is set in its own set of galleries where a variety of media, including photography, film, sculpture and painting are displayed. The themes are Nude/Action/Body, History/Memory/Society, Still Life/Object/Real Life and Landscape/Matter/Environment, and feature works by artists such as Dalí, Picasso, Matisse, Warhol, Rothko and Gilbert & George. One of the most provocative displays is Tracey Emin’s video booth, in which the avant-garde British artist provides a candid account of her personal life experiences as a metaphor for common humanity. More subtle and thought-provoking is an exhibition entitled ‘1985: Shape of a Year’, which explores the similarities and differences in art from around the world in a single year, and the ways in which art reflected global fashions and events of the time. ‘Ways of Seeing’ uses paintings, photographs, sculpture and audiovisual art to look into the relationship between art and reality and how the advent of photography changed the way artists portrayed the world.
