Raekoja plats (Tallinn Town Hall Square)
Description: Tallinn’s old town was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. With its colourful buildings, turreted walls and gabled roofs it is one of the best-preserved historic centres in Europe. All the winding cobbled streets lead on to the Raekoja plats (Town Hall Square), which is dominated by the imposing façade of the Raekoda, or Town Hall (tel: (06) 457 900; e-mail: raekoda@tallinnlv.ee). The building was constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries at a time when Tallinn was an important member of the German-dominated Hanseatic League, an association of Baltic trading ports, and is the only surviving late Gothic town hall in Northern Europe. Its soaring steeple bears a 16th-century weather vane portraying the medieval warrior, Old Thomas’, guardian of the city. The Raeapteek orTown Council Pharmacy (tel: (06) 314 860; e-mail: raeapt@hot.ee) lies on the northern side of the square; although the present façade dates from the 17th century, there has been a pharmacy here since 1422 – fortunately the remedies it sells have improved from those available in Medieval times. Open-air concerts are held here in summer and its many cafés and eating places make it a bustling meeting place for both tourists and Tallinners alike.
