Morne Trois Pitons National Park
Description: The Morne Trois Pitons National Park encompasses 69 sq kilometres (27 sq miles) of varied landscape – lush tropicana and rainforests contrast starkly with volcanic terrain characterised by deep valleys and bubbling pools. The park was created in 1975 and is centred around the Morne Trois Pitons (meaning mountain of three peaks’), a triple-spiked mountain formed from volcanic remains, which rises to 1342m (3681ft) above sea level. The Valley of Desolation is a barren area of volcanic rock which contains over 50 fumaroles (geysers) emitting sulphurous gases and steam, where visitors can see multicoloured mineral streams and pools of boiling grey mud. One of the most beautiful sites in the park is the Emerald Pool, a waterfall grotto located against a backdrop of tropical plants and flowers. The Boiling Lake is the largest of its kind in the world and lies in a volcanic crater. Many of the sites in the park can be visited via the many trails, although some of the trails, such as the one which runs to the Boiling Lake, are difficult and are best undertaken with a local guide.
