Sightseeing: Located on the Black Sea, the fishing village of Nesebur has many attractive wooden fishermen’s houses lining its winding, cobbled streets. Founded in 510 BC by the Greeks, it became an important Byzantine trading port and is famous for its four dozen churches dating from this period. These include the Church of Sveti Spas, which houses some beautiful 17th-century frescoes, and Church of St John Aliturgetos, whose striking exterior is decorated with hundreds of shells, crosses and ceramic panels and is a perfect example of Byzantine architecture at its finest. Nearby is the family resort of Sunny Beach which is a popular excursion from Nesebur.

Shopping: Leather goods, jewellery, Byzantine religious icons, needlework and hand-crafted musical instruments.

Eating Out: Cold yoghurt soup with cucumbers, peppers or aubergines stuffed with meat, kebapcheta (small, strongly spiced, minced meat rolls) and banitsa (a pastry stuffed with fruit or cheese). White wines include Karlouski Misket, Tamianka and Evksinograde; heavy red wines include Trakia and Mavroud.
